VLM to launch Birmingham to Antwerp flights

VLM Airlines has announced it will begin flights from Birmingham Airport (BHX/EGDBB) to Antwerp (ANR/EBAW) from the 12th February 2018.

Belgian based VLM Airlines (VO/TCW) will operate a daily weekday service (Mon-Fri) between the two cities using a Fokker 50 aircraft.

The port city of Antwerp is on Belgium’s River Scheldt. It’s history dates back to the Middle Ages. Linked to the diamond trade, the centuries-old Diamond District houses thousands of diamond traders, cutters and polishers.

The cities strong Flemish roots are shown in the Grote Markt, a central square in the old town.

Speaking about the route Karl Rickard, CEO of VLM Airlines stated: “VLM Airlines is very happy to connect Antwerp with Birmingham again. Antwerp is one of the largest seaports in Europe, the diamond capital of the world, the second largest petrochemical centre in the world. This thriving city is also known for its bold and diverse arts, fashion and culinary scene. A short ride takes you to other popular Belgian cities including Bruges, Ghent and Brussels as well as to Dutch cities such as Rotterdam and Eindhoven.”

William Pearson, Aviation Director, Birmingham Airport added: “It is fantastic news that Birmingham will be reconnected with the Belgium city of Antwerp. This medieval city has something for everyone, steeped in history but also named as the country’s capital of cool. It is also known as the world’s leading diamond city. We are delighted that VLM will be operating this service.”
