Antwerp based VLM Airlines has filed for bankruptcy today.
In a statement on its website it said “We are sorry to have to inform you that VLM Airlines NV has filed for bankruptcy on Wednesday 22nd June 2016. All flights are cancelled with immediate effect”
VLM was due to operate the Cardiff Airport to London City (CWL – LCY) route on behalf of Flybe which starts in September but this was thrown into turmoil when VLM applied for bankruptcy protection in the Belgian courts with a plan to return to profit by mid-2017.
Despite the protection being granted the airline officially filed for bankruptcy.
Flybe recently changed the operator of the CWL to LCY flight and recently confirmed it will be operated by one of their own Dash 8 aircraft. They previously told Aviation Wales that all flights and bookings would be unaffected by the VLM crisis.
