Bristol Airport (BRS/EGGD) has applied for Compulsory Purchase Orders (CPO) on 22 pieces of land around the North Somerset airport.
The land is primarily around the A38, which passes the regional airport, and will be used to improve access into the airport and turn the single carriageway road into a dual carriageway.
The purchases are in order to help the airport increase its passenger capacity from 10 million per year to 12 million per year however those plans were rejected by North Somerset Council last year.
Bristol Airport, which is owned by the Ontario Teachers’ Pension Plan, is currently appealing that decision.
The purchase of the land could give the airport the opportunity to create the infrastructure to handle 12 million passengers per year during a period when growth is effectively suspended.
The planning decision will now more from a council to a national level and the applications for Compulsory Purchase Orders will be assessed by the Secretary of State.
