Swansea City Football Club has released a statement condemning an image mocking the air crash which killed Cardiff City player Emiliano Sala.
The club said that it was “aware of the disgraceful image currently circulating on social media ahead of Sunday’s South Wales derby in relation to the sad death of Cardiff City striker Emiliano Sala.”
The image shared on social media is a mock boarding pass for “Swansea City Airlines” and bears the name of Emiliano Sala. The photo appears to show multiple copies of it printed out in the form of handouts and comes ahead of the clubs derby clash with rivals Cardiff City.
The club said that the image “is shameful and does not represent this football club or our supporters in any way.” and said that it was working with South Wales Police to help identify the source of the image.
The club added: “Any supporters displaying this type of material or behaving in an unacceptable manner will face criminal proceedings.
“The club will be strongly supporting South Wales Police in any public order or hate crime prosecutions surrounding these images and any related incidents during Sunday’s fixture at the Liberty Stadium.”
Investigations into the crash which killed Emiliano Sala are still ongoing.
