Scottish airline Loganair (LM/LOG) has stepped in to safeguard 16 key routes that were left without an operator when Flybe collapsed yesterday.

The new routes will see Loganair add nearly 400 flights per week to its schedule.

The routes are all Loganair’s hubs at Aberdeen, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Inverness and Newcastle to regional airports across the UK.

Flybe collapsed in the early hours of the morning on Thursday 5th March after failing to secure a rescue deal from its shareholders or the UK Government.

Loganair’s Chief Executive Jonathan Hinkles said: “The collapse of a long-standing airline like Flybe marks a desperately sad day, especially for the airline’s dedicated team of employees and for customers facing disruption to their journeys.   By stepping in quickly with a comprehensive plan, Loganair is aiming to maintain essential air connectivity within the UK regions to keep customers flying, and to offer new employment to former Flybe staff members who are facing an uncertain future today.”

Humberside Airport based Eastern Airways (T3/EZE) has also announced it plans to operate some routes left vacant by Flybe including Aberdeen to Birmingham, Southampton to Manchester and Southampton to Newcastle.

The extra Eastern Airways flights will commence next week.
