Today saw the Royal Air Force (RAF) say farewell to 100 Squadron which is being stood down at RAF Leeming ahead of the full withdrawal of the Hawk T1 from service.
In its most recent form, 100 Squadron provided aggressor aircraft for RAF combat training using the Hawk T1 playing a vital role in training new pilots and enhancing the skills of seasoned ones.
Formed in 1917, 100 Squadron has operated through two world wars flying aircraft ranging from Royal Aircraft Factory bi-planes through to the Canberra, Victor and most recently the Hawk T1.
The Hawk T1 was initially scheduled to operate until 2027 but the Ministry of Defence brought forward its retirement to 2022.
During the farewell, crowds were both inside and outside of the base were treated to flypasts of multiple 100 Squadron aircraft and of course, the only operator of the Hawk T1 left, the Royal Air Force Aerobatic Team (RAFAT) The Red Arrows.
