Bumper passenger numbers at Cardiff Airport for June 2017 have brought the rolling year total to over 1.4 million, the highest they have been since 2010.

There was a 19% hike in passengers for June compared to the same period in 2016, an increase that saw 185,787 passengers use Cardiff Airport.

The increase was helped by Cardiff hosting the UEFA Champions League Final which saw 21,000 extra passengers along with the launching of new routes by Iberia Express (Madrid) and Flybe (Rome & Guernsey). Spanish low-cost carrier Vueling also added extra capacity to its network of flights to Spain.

Commercial Director of Cardiff Airport, Spencer Birns said: “The first half of 2017 has seen a step change for Wales’ national airport. We’ve welcomed new airlines and our existing airline partners are reacting to increased market demand by adding new routes and extra capacity.”

The passenger numbers are the highest they have been since the Welsh Government took ownership of Cardiff Airport in 2013 and mark a significant milestone in the growth plans for Wales National Airport.
