Irish budget airline Ryanair is closing its base at Frankfurt Airport (FRA/EDDF) on 31st March after 5 years citing increased landing fees as the main reason.

Ryanair had previously enjoyed discounted fees at the FRAPORT owned airport which reportedly expired in 2022. This action suggests that they have not been able to negotiate ongoing reductions.

In a statement, the airline said: “Instead of giving Ryanair an incentive to stay and grow, Frankfurt has decided to drive away traffic and jobs by increasing airport charges,”

The German Government has previously hit back at the airline after Ryanair filed legal action over the state-aid given to Frankfurt Airports biggest customer Lufthansa during the coronavirus pandemic.

The five aircraft based at Frankfurt will be relocated to more “cost-effective” bases such as Nuremberg which will see a two-aircraft base.

Frankfurt will remain as a destination for the Dublin-based carrier but passengers booked for travel after 31st March will be contacted with potential changes to flight times.
