Ryanair has today announced it will commence a Cardiff to Faro, Portugal route for Summer 2017.

The new flight is the 2nd route from Cardiff Airport (CWL/EGFF) for the Irish low-cost carrier and comes on the back of the success of its existing Tenerife flight.

The flight will operate twice weekly on a Monday and Friday starting March 27th 2017 and tickets will start at £24.99

Offering a low-cost service to Faro puts Ryanair in direct competition with Flybe who not only have a base at Cardiff Airport but already operate Cardiff to Faro 4 times a week. With Flybe showing good figures for the route it would have no doubt influenced Ryanair’s destination decision.

There have long been calls for Cardiff Airport to attract the low-cost carriers and with Ryanair now increasing their capacity and adding new routes that finally appears to be happening.

Ryanair expects its Tenerife and Faro flights will add 43,000 passengers per year to Cardiff Airports figures.

Speaking about the new route, Cardiff Airport Chairman Roger Lewis said: “It is fantastic to see Ryanair increase its routes and flights at Cardiff Airport. Our customers now have even more choice to travel to what is an extremely popular destination.

Ryanair is responding to the demands of Welsh passengers by adding another essential route to its network. It is vital that our customers are offered a wide variety of choice when it comes holiday destinations.”
