Jet2 has announced a new multi-million pound cadet scheme that will see it train 60 aspiring pilots at zero cost to the cadets.
Cost has long been a barrier to many who want to be pilots with most training schemes costing upwards of £100,000 with no guarantee of a job at the end of it and airlines willing to invest in future pilots who don’t have experience are few and far between.
Under the new scheme with Jet2, called Jet2FlightPath, anyone who wants to become a pilot can apply to be a pilot and if selected, will get a fully funded ATPL (Air Transport Pilots Licence) course at one of Jet2’s three partners Skyborne Airline Academy, Leading Edge and FTE Jerez.
They will also be trained to become a Jet2 pilot with a type rating on either Airbus A321s or Boeing 737s.
The cadets will also be fully immersed in the Jet2 culture gaining exposure to various roles within the business such as customer facing roles like ground crew and cabin crew in order to fully understand Jet2 as a holiday company and airline.
As well as investing in the future of its business, Jet2 hopes the scheme will promote diversity and social mobility in its workforce. Candidates looking to apply must have at least five GCSEs at grade 4 or above, including maths and a science subject, or equivalent qualifications.
Steve Heapy, CEO of Jet2 airline and Jet2holidays said: “The launch of this brand-new and fully funded pilot training programme is momentous news for Jet2.com and for aspiring pilots. We know that the cost of training is an obstacle to many people who dream of becoming a commercial airline pilot, so we are very proud to announce this groundbreaking programme which will help us make that dream become a reality for many, including those who may have thought that the opportunity was beyond their means.
“By opening this incredible opportunity up to so many people from so many backgrounds, we expect the programme to be extremely popular, so we look forward to receiving applications and helping many wonderful flying careers take off.”
