
An Air India flight from Ahmedabad in India to London Gatwick (LGW/EGKK) has crashed shortly after taking off from Ahmedabad.
Flight AI171 was being operated by a Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner (VT-ANB) and according to data from Flightradar 24, the last data was received from the aircraft “seconds after take-off”.
The Gatwick bound flight is popular with the UK’s Indian community and also for tourists visiting India.
In a statement on X, Air India said: “Flight AI171, operating Ahmedabad-London Gatwick, was involved in an incident today, 12 June 2025.
“At this moment, we are ascertaining the details and will share further updates at the earliest.”
Air India has confirmed that 242 people were onboard and 53 Britons were among the passengers.
Local police have reported there are no survivors from the aircraft however other sources have cited at least one Briton has survived.
The number of injuries on the ground is unknown but the aircraft crashed onto a residential area.
The final moments of the flight were captured on a video that has been verified.
Video circulating on social media shows an explosion and billowing black smoke from the crash site.
