London Luton Airport (LTN/EGGW) has appointed science and technology leader, Leidos as the principal contractor for upgrades to its airport security and screening services which could see approved liquids and electronic items being able to remain in bags.
Currently, laptops and other devices need to be removed from bags at airports in the UK and screened along with any containers containing liquid but with the installation of 12 integrated ClearScan™ cabin baggage scanners that could be a thing of the past.
“This is an exciting opportunity for our team, and we look forward to supporting these important initiatives at London Luton Airport,” said Brad Buswell, Senior Vice President and Operations Manager at Leidos. “By focusing on end-to-end solutions versus individual systems, we will deliver a holistic security management solution, which can scale with the airport’s future needs.”
The technology, which the UK government says must be installed at all UK airports by 2024, should be complete at Luton by the end of this year.
Leidos will also install its ProPassage™ automated tray return systems.
“When we evaluated solutions that would provide the highest level of security while keeping a simple, friendly passenger journey and experience at London Luton Airport, Leidos was the ideal choice,” said Chris Jones, Head of Security at London Luton Airport. “We look forward to realizing the benefits of these new technologies.”
