Virgin Atlantic (VS/VIR) has signed a deal to purchase seven more A330-900neo airliners directly from Airbus as it looks to complete its fleet transformation.

The latest order takes the total commitment for the A330neo by Virgin to 19 and was announced onboard Virgin Atlantic’s latest A330, G-VSRB “Ruby Rebel” which was chosen as a nod to Sir Richard Branson who founded the airline.

Speaking onboard the aircraft CEO, Virgin Atlantic Shai Weiss said: “Today, we complete our multi-billion-dollar fleet transformation, with the purchase of seven additional A330-900s, which we know our customers and our people love to fly. Flying the youngest fleet is the most readily available and significant lever towards decarbonising long-haul aviation and we are proud to already operate one of the youngest and most fuel and carbon efficient fleets across the Atlantic.”

“Our special partnership with Airbus began with the arrival of ‘Lady in Red’ in 1993, with our most recent arrival, ‘Ruby Rebel’, arriving to mark our 40th birthday this year. Virgin Atlantic has flown more than 60 Airbus tails in the last three decades. While not first to the party, they’ve been our main dance partner, making our customers smile ever since.”

Virgin Atlantic A330neos feature Airbus’ Airspace cabin including larger overhead cabin bins, high-levels of comfort and improved lighting ambience.

The aircraft are powered by Rolls-Royce Trent 7000 engines giving the aircraft a range of 7,200nm non-stop making it a perfect fit for Virgin Atlantic’s long-haul focused network. They engines can also operate on 50% Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) helping the airline towards its decarbonisation goals.

Giving an additional boost to the UK, the wings for the A330neo are built at Airbus’ Broughton facility in North Wales.

Airbus Chief Executive Officer, Commercial Aircraft, Christian Scherer added: “We are grateful for Virgin Atlantic’s decision to expand its A330neo fleet as part of its strategy to have the youngest fleet across the Atlantic. The A330neo not only delivers unbeatable operational seat mile cost and an exceptional passenger experience, it also greatly enhances Virgin Atlantic’s fleet efficiency and contributes to
their sustainability journey. We look forward to continuing this smooth and successful collaboration for many years to come.”

Virgin Atlantic’s A330neos also feature the airline’s signature “Upper Class” suites which offer fully flat beds and a large leather seat as well as enhanced in-flight entertainment (IFE).

As the aircraft are being purchased directly from Airbus the order will increase the number of aircraft directly owned by Virgin Atlantic at a time when many airlines are leasing.
