LED light upgrades complete at Inverness and Kirkwall

New energy efficient runway lighting has been installed at Kirkwall and Inverness Airports as part of an upgrade to the airport ground lighting systems across the airports which are owned by Highlands and Islands Airports Limited (HIAL)

In addition to the runways, taxiway and apron lights have also been upgraded to the new LED systems which offer an 80% energy saving on the previous installation and means the airport remains Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) compliant.

The work at both airports was planned to cause minimal disruption to operations.

Graeme Bell, Inverness Airport General Manager, said: “This project has delivered a modern, energy-efficient lighting system that strengthens our infrastructure while supporting our environmental objectives. It’s a crucial step to the airport remaining safe and sustainable for years to come.”

jamie Conley, Kirkwall Airport Manager, added: “The completion of this project is a major achievement for Kirkwall Airport. The new LED system not only enhances safety and operational compliance but also supports our wider efforts to reduce energy consumption and environmental impact.”
