Calling all mavericks! easyJet (U2/EZY) has launched a new recruitment campaign which sees kids parody the 1980s classic, Top Gun!

The video sees kids recreate scenes from the film in a bid to dispel stereotypes around roles in aviation such as only 6% of the world’s pilots being female.

Aimed at inspiring younger generations, the campaign is timed to coincide with the much-awaited launch of the sequel, Top Gun Maverick.

According to easyJet, around 80% of the British public still believes that Hollywood perpetuates gender stereotypes that can affect career choices from a young age.

The advert was filmed at London Luton airport with children of easyJet staff aged between seven and 12 years old.

Johan Lundgren, easyJet’s CEO said: “Top Gun is one of the most famous aviation films of all time. So, we wanted to create our own rendition of the movie that was both entertaining and inspiring to a younger audience, to show young people that they don’t have to be limited by outdated stereotypes of jobs in the industry, as well as highlight the fantastic career opportunities that easyJet has to offer.

“easyJet has long championed greater diversity across our business and the industry, and while we have made important progress in areas like our pilot community, there is still work to do. Increasing diversity in all of its forms across our airline and creating an inclusive environment where people can be themselves at work is incredibly important to us and is a long-term focus for easyJet, so we will continue to ensure we lead the industry on this issue.”

The role of Maverick in the easyJet advert is played by Rei Diec who said: “I’ve always loved flying and getting to be a pilot for a day was the best day ever and a dream come true!”
