Welsh Flying Medic, Dr Ami Jones, has been awarded an MBE (Member of the British Empire) in the Queens birthday honours.

Dr Jones is the National Director for Emergency Medical Retrieval & Transfer Service (EMRTS) that works with the Wales Air Ambulance to provide life saving critical care across Wales.

The EMRTS, informally known as the “Flying Doctors”, together with Wales Air Ambulance aims to bring the hospital to the road side.

The service, which was introduced in 2015, allows doctors to reach about 95% of the Welsh population within 30 minutes.

Dr Jones said that the honour was “unexpected”.

Also receiving an MBE is Captain Winston Thomas, owner of Pembrey Airport.

The honour, for Services to Aviation in Wales, is recognition of his work at the Carmarthenshire airport which has provided services to both the RAF & the Army when using Pembrey ranges along with the US Air Force.

When the Royal Air Force left in 1958 Pembrey airport was left to rot. Captain Thomas recently told us it took six months to just pressure wash the runway before repairs could be completed. He has spent over £4m to get the airfield back to a usable standard.

The 80 year-old said “It is a privilege to have my name put forward on to the honours list”
