A US Air Force (USAF) F15 Eagle has crashed into the North sea off the Yorkshire Coast.
A search and rescue operation was put into action near Flamborough Head, East Yorkshire.
Later in the day, Col. Will Marshall, Commanding Officer of the 48th Fighter Wing confirmed that the body of the pilot had been recovered.
Col. Marshall said “It is with a very heavy heart I confirm that the pilot of the downed F15C Eagle has been located and confirmed deceased”
He went on to say that the name of the pilot would not be released until all the next of kin had been informed.
The USAF has a permanent F15 presence based in the UK at RAF Lakenheath.
The 48th Fighter Wing is currently made up of the 492d, 493d and 494th fighter squadrons.
The group has a mixture of F15 C/D Eagles and the F15E Strike Eagle. The crashed aircraft is understood to be an F15C, which is a single-seat aircraft.
A spokesperson for HM Coastguard confirmed the operation had ended saying: “The search for the pilot of a United States military aircraft from RAF Lakenheath which went into the sea off Flamborough Head has been called off.
“Our thoughts are with the friends and family of the pilot at this difficult time.“
