UK Airports brace for busiest day of the year so far

The late may bank holiday is upon and UK airports are set for their busiest day of the year so far with not only a long weekend looming, but for many, its also school half-term.

According to data from viation analytics firm Cirium, 12,185 flights are due to depart the UK over the bank holiday weekend with 3,204 flights on Friday the 23rd May alone making it busier than the early May bank holiday which only saw 11,746 flights over the weekend.

Total departures are still down overall though with this years number being 6% lower than the last pre-pandemic year of 2019.

The most popular destinations this weekend from UK airports are Dublin, Amsterdam, Palma, Alicante and Malaga.

The UK’s busiest airport, London Heathrow (LHR/EGLL) will unsprupisingly see the largest number of departures with 2,677 flights taking off over the weekend.

This is followed by London Gatwick (LGW/EGKK), Manchester (MAN/EGCC and London Stansted (STN/EGSS)
