Teesside Airport closed after light aircraft crash

Teesside Airport (MME/EGNV) will remain closed until at least Monday morning following a light aircraft accident that has left one person with serious injuries.

The incident happened this morning and is believed to have involved one of the based General Aviation aircraft, Grumman American AA-5 Traveler G-BBSA, which crashed just meters after taking off after apparently losing power.

According to County Durham and Darlington Fire and Rescue Service general manager Rob Cherrie, the aircraft “had taken off then come back down again very quickly” adding that three people had to be cut out of the plane.

The North_East ambulance service sent two air ambulances to the scene and one person was airlifted to the hospital with serious injuries and another two were transported by road.

A spokesperson said: “We are hopeful the airport will reopen on Monday 27 September.

The AAIB confirmed it was investigating the accident.
