A pilot of a light aircraft has suffered a head injury after being forced to ditch his aircraft into the sea in Whitesands Bay near St Davids, Wales.

It is understood that the Piper PA-28 Cherokee G-BAJR hit waves as it ditched into the sea near the shoreline and witnesses pulled the pilot from the wreckage. It is understood to have flown from the Bedford area, where the aircraft is registered.

The maritime & Coastguard Agency (MCA) said: “Just before 1:15pm today (04/09/18) HM Coastguard received multiple 999 calls reporting a light aircraft crash landing into shallow water off the Whitsands Bay area of St Davids.

“A number of emergency services are on scene, including the St Davids Coastguard Rescue Team. The pilot was the only occupant of the plane and has been recovered from the wreckage by the Whitesands beach lifeguards.”

Andy Carroll, Coastguard Controller added: “The pilot sustained a head injury and is suffering from shock, he has been handed into the care of the ambulance service.”

The Air Accident Investigations Branch (AAIB) are expected to send a team to the crash site.
