One person has died when a light aircraft crashed at Caernarfon Airport this evening. The Pilot, who was the only person on board, was sadly pronounced dead at the scene.

Witnesses described a massive fireball as the aircraft crashed just before 6:30 pm this evening.

North Wales Police received their first call to the scene at 18:29 and attended to find an aircraft that had crashed within the airfield boundary.

In a statement, Chief Inspector Sharon McCairn, North Wales Police said: “A cordon is in place around the site and we are urging the public to remain clear of the area to allow the emergency services to deal with the incident.”

“Enquiries into the full circumstances are ongoing and we are in contact with the Air Accident Investigation Branch.”

The Air Accident Investigations Branch (AAIB) has confirmed they are sending a team to the crash site.

Witnesses have described seeing a twin-engined light aircraft that came into the airfield extremely fast and without any landing gear. It then hit the runway before exploding. The post crash fire was extinguished by airport fire crews.

Caernarfon Airport in North Wales is a General Aviation airfield located around 4 miles southwest of Caernarfon. It has a single licensed 3,500ft long tarmac runway along with one unlicensed, and one disused runway.
