London City Airport sees queues cut in half after install of new scanners

London City Airport (LCY/EGLC) has reported a 50% reduction in passenger queueing times at security since it installed new CT scanners a year ago.

The East London airport was the first UK airport to fully install next-generation CT scanners which means that laptops and liquids no longer need to be removed from hand luggage.

The new scanners also mean that passengers are no longer restricted to 100ml liquid bottles and can carry liquid up to 2 litres, something that should have been rolled out across the UK but installation delays have forced the extension of the deadline.

Since the technology was installed at London City, passenger satisfaction has risen to 80% when using the airport and security facilities.

The airport has also seen an increase in leisure travel from the airport which has been traditionally more business orientated. Over 55% of passengers now travel through the airport for leisure purposes.

This has been helped with a change of focus for London City’s largest carrier, BA Cityflyer (CJ/CFE) which has p[provided a strong leisure focus in its summer schedule with destinations such as Mykonos, Skiathos, Bergerac and San Sebastian featuring.

Aurigny has also started a twice-daily service to the Channels Islands and ITA Airways has commenced two daily flights to Rome.

London City has also been helped by its reputation for punctuality. CAA Data for 2022-2023 showed it to be the most reliable for on-time departures of all the London airports.
