Juneyao Air to launch new route from Manchester Airport

Chinese carrier Juneyao Air (HO/DKH) is to launch a fifth freedom route from Manchester Airport (MAN/EGCC).

From 31st March 2020, the airline will operate a three-times per week service From Manchester Airport to Shanghai Pudong International (PVG/ZSPD) via Helsinki (HEL/EFHK), Finland.

The route will be operated by a Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner and is an extension of the existing Shanghai to Helsinki route.

Speaking about the new route Wang Junjin, Chairman of Juneyao Air said that the airline “is delighted to launch its first fifth-freedom route to Manchester, and we look forward to developing Manchester’s traffic growth in the coming years. This route will further promote Greater Manchester’s tourism, as well as giving Britain an opportunity to boost its trade and investment links to China”

What is Fifth Freedom?

Freedoms of the Air are a core set of principles for the commercial aviation market and the fifth freedom is defined as “The right to fly between two foreign countries on a flight originating or ending in one’s own country”.

For passengers, it can often offer a cheap alternative to shorter routes and given they are usually an extension of a long-haul flight, a better aircraft.

In this case, passengers will be able to travel between Manchester and Helsinki on a Boeing 787-9 rather than the alternative single-aisle airliners.
