Iberia’s subsidiary airline Iberia Express is set for a winter schedule between Newcastle Airport to Madrid, Lanzarote and Gran Canaria.

The flights will operate from 26th December 2020 to 3rd January 2021. This will be the first time the North East of England will be served by Iberia Express, which was named as the most punctual low cost carrier in Europe.

Richard Knight, Chief Operating Officer at Newcastle Airport said: “We are delighted to welcome Iberia Express – part of the IAG group – to the region and hope this will be the start of a long relationship.

“There is no doubt this has been a challenging year however, the North East travelling public have shown that demand is there to travel.”

Iberia Express’ flights come after Jet2 and TUI announced an increased schedule to the Canary Islands over winter. This is following increased demand following their addition to the travel corridor list which comprises of 53 regions at press time.

The increased demand will be a welcome change for the airline industry which is expected to lose over £87 billion in revenue as a result of the pandemic.

Evandro Vianna, Chief Commercial Officer at Iberia Express, said: “The Canary Islands is one of the most popular destinations during these dates, and because of this, we have opted to operate these new routes to and from the islands of Lanzarote and Gran Canaria.

“The health and safety of our passengers, crew and collaborators is of course our absolute priority, and to facilitate this, we have implemented a number of prevention and hygiene measures that ensure safety on our flights and provide the customer with a pleasant flying experience.”
