A planned strike by members of the Unite Union working for Red Handling at London Gatwick (LGW/EGKK) has been called off after the two sides were able to resolve the issue surrounding pensions.

Over a hundred employees went on strike last month as Red Handling and Unite failed to get confirmation or proof the Red Handling had been paying pension contributions and pension plans had not been set up.

Red Handling has now provided this with Unite saying it has seen proof of pension contribution payments being made to Royal London and that Red Handling has agreed to cover any loss of interest on contributions that hadn’t been paid.

Unite general secretary Sharon Graham said: “The way Red Handling was playing fast and loose with our members’ pensions was completely unacceptable and we are glad they have come to their senses and paid up.

“This win for our members shows that industrial action works. It pays to be a member of Unite.”

The dispute also listed concerns over working hours and Red Handling employees, which include baggage handlers and flight dispatchers, have not agreed new terms of work which includes overtime payments and guaranteed time off.

Unite regional officer Ben Davis said: “The situation with pensions, late wages and a lack of breaks was taking a big toll on our members and they are glad this has now been resolved.

“These important workplace wins came about because our members stood together and took action.”
