Exeter based Flybe (BE/BEE) has said it is to invest a new aircraft at Cardiff Airport from 27th March.

The Embraer E175 Regional Jet will be the third aircraft to be based at Wales’ National airport and will require 22 additional crew members to be recruited.

The basing of a third aircraft will allow Flybe to increase the frequency of existing routes such as Paris, Dublin, Berlin & Rome and also opens up the possibility of new routes through winter 2018/2019 and new routes for summer 2019.

The move comes as rival regional airline Stobart Group has declared an interest in taking over Flybe which has been financially struggling in recent years.

According to Flybe’s chief strategy officer, Vince Hodder the airline will consider flights to fresh destinations in Spain, Germany & Italy along with key locations in the UK.

There is also the possibility of a fourth Flybe aircraft later in the year.

Flybe has created around 60 jobs as a result of its operations at Cardiff Airport.
