A Flybe flight has returned to Cardiff Airport after being struck by lightning shortly after departure.

Flight BE4585 took off just after 4pm for the short flight from Cardiff to Jersey but was forced to run after the lightning strike as a precautionary measure.

The aircraft, a Flybe Embraer E190 G-FBEJ was not believed to have been damaged in the incident but was met with emergency vehicles as a precaution. All passengers were safely disembarked at Cardiff Airport.

Lightning strikes on aircraft are fairly common and pose no significant threat however a direct strike will always result in the aircraft seeking to land as soon as possible to check for any potential damage.

The flight has now been cancelled as a replacement aircraft was not available.
