One dead in Essex microlight accident

Essex police have confirmed that the pilot of a microlight that crashed earlier today has died at the scene, he was the only person onboard the aircraft.

Speaking about the accident, a spokesperson for the Police said: “Officers attended and, sadly, a man aged in his 50s was pronounced dead at the scene.

His next of kin have been informed.

We will be maintaining a presence at the scene over the coming days to assist the Air Accidents Investigation Branch in their enquiries.”

The microlight is understood to have come down near Bells Road in Belchamp Walter, Essex at around midday.

The site of the incident is understood to be near to a private airstrip in Belchamp Walter just north of Soft Road.

The Air Accidents Investigation Branch has not yet confirmed whether it is dispatching a team to the site.
