Embraer and Raízen go green with Sustainable Aviation Fuel

Raízen has a broad portfolio of renewable solutions and a unique business model to lead its markets and drive the global energy transition.

Following the Embraer E195-E2’s sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) test flight with one engine running on SAF, the Brazillian manufacturer has signed a Letter of Intent with Brazillian energy company Raízen to further develop the technology.

This helps to further advance both companies sustainability commitments as well as benefiting the air transport industry. This is part of Embraer’s carbon cutting programme that is hoped to cut 60% of it’s carbon output by 2040.

Carlos Alberto Griner, Vice President of People, Environmental, Social and Governence (ESG), and Communications at Embraer said, “SAF plays a key role in reducing aviation emissions in the short and medium term. Therefore, this agreement aims to stimulate the growth and sustainability of the value chain as a whole. ESG is one of the pillars of our strategic plan and we are looking at every opportunity to accelerate the reduction of our carbon emissions.”

All Embraer aircraft are already certified to operate with SAF as a 50% blend with standard Jet A/A1 kerosene. This is hoped to be pushed to a 100% SAF blend in future to help with the companies decarbonisation efforts.

Antonio Cardoso, Vice President of Marketing and Services at Raízen said, “As an integrated energy company, Raízen has challenging goals as we intend to expand the offer renewable energy and fuel sources to the market by 80% and make this increase as efficient as possible in our production process to help produce the impact on our customer. “As the largest sugarcane ethanol producer in the world, it is only natural that we are looking at a possible supply of SAF. This partnership with Embraer, a global reference, reinforces the sustainability agenda and expansion of the company’s portfolio.”

It is hoped that by 2030, this partnership will help Embraer use SAF blends in 100% of it’s fuel usage in Brazil.
