Flybe (BEE) has today announced it will commence daily flights to London City Airport (LCY) from Cardiff Airport (CWL) from the 12th September 2016.

The move coincides with Network Rail closing the Severn rail tunnel for 6 weeks for work on the line adding over an hour onto the travel time by train from Cardiff to London.

With a cost of around £80 for a return trip the flights are not only significantly cheaper than rail travel but with a flight time of around 1 hour, significantly faster as well.

Flying into London City means you are just minutes away from Central London making it a great choice for business and leisure travel.

The flights are expected to be operated by VLM on behalf of Flybe using a 58 seat Fokker 50 aircraft With 4 flights per day Monday to Friday and 2 on weekends there is also plenty of choice on times.

Robert Lloyd Griffiths, Director of the Institute of Directors Wales (IoD Wales) said: “Connectivity is crucial for business and the launch of the Flybe service from Cardiff Airport to London City, in such speedy response to the Severn tunnel closure, will be welcomed by IoD members and the wider business community as an important option in keeping the imperative Wales-London transport channels open”

Whilst only a temporary measure during the Severn Tunnel closure, a source close to the airline said it is not inconceivable for the route to remain should it prove cost-effective.

The flights are available to book now at Flybe.com
