Cardiff Airport has been name as the UK’s fastest growing airport after the latest figures revealed a 28% rise in passenger numbers and a 13th consecutive month of growth.

Airport Managing Director Debra Barber described the current trend as “exciting times” following years of decline at the Wales’s only international Airport.

The Welsh Government owned Airport is bucking the trend of decline under its previous owners TBI Abertis. The first year of Welsh Government ownership also saw a 38,000 passenger drop as plans were taking shape for the recovery of the Airport.

Speaking about the rise Roger Lewis, chairman of the airport, said: “Today we are sending a signal to the world that Wales is well and truly open for business.”

Ms Barber went on to say: “As the country’s national airport we are proud to see more and more Welsh customers flying through each day, whilst also acting as the gateway to Wales for international visitors. I’m sure that with ongoing success such as this we will see airlines continuing to invest in Wales and increasing choice for our customers.”
