European airframer Airbus has won an order for 70 single-aisle Airbus A321neo aircraft from American carrier United Airlines (UA/UAL).

The order brings the total to 130 of the type for United with 50 Airbus A321XLRs already on order.

Christian Scherer, Airbus Chief Commercial Officer and Head of International said: “Such a significant order from a great airline like United underscores that the A321neo offers unmatched capabilities, operating economics, and passenger friendliness,”

Although most of the aircraft will be assembled in Mobile Alabama, the wings for the Airbus A321 airliners are made in Broughton, North Wales meaning the order is also great news for Airbus UK and its employees.

Scherer added: “No other aircraft can do what the A321neo can do, and the Airbus team is most gratified by United’s strong affirmation of its premium status. The A321neo will complement United’s future A321XLR aircraft, together creating a privileged segment on its own.”

The order is part of the airlines ‘United Next’ programme which aims to see the airline reduce its CO₂ emissions 100% by 2050. The lower carbon footprint of the A321neo will help the airline work towards this.
